Very often technology and creativity & design are seen as different, even opposing, worlds. Even though in this region we play at a superb international level in both domains.
While design and technology could also be seen as two sides of the coin called ‘human centered innovation’. Yes, the starting point for the innovation process might differ, but you need both sides to bring their a-game to make real impact. And by the way, a famous saying underlines this: ‘design is too important to leave it just to designers’. A happy marriage between techies and designers might be the most promising way forward with the challenges we face!
Let’s start dating!
Director Dutch Design Foundation · The Netherlands
Martijn Paulen (1970) graduated with honours from Tilburg University as a psychologist. He was an organisation consultant, taught Organisation Studies at Tilburg University, and was director of Innovation at TIAS Business School.
In 2013 Paulen was appointed ceo of Dutch Design Foundation, the organisation behind Dutch Design Week (the largest Design Festival in Northern Europe), Dutch Design Awards, World Design Embassies and What if Lab. He has a strong belief that design has an important role to play for a more sustainable, social, and beautiful future. He believes in the forward thinking, not naïve but yet optimistic action oriented design-approach to improve our society. With all the issues we face, we need to role up our sleeves higher than ever and start (re-)designing. His organisation focuses on experiment, innovation, cross-overs and societal impact. Particular attention goes to supporting young talents & future makers.

The exponential rate of change of computing power enables accelerating developments in sensor technology, AI computing and in robotics and mobility. Cars will become like an iPad on wheels. We are world champion with our soccer playing robots and our surgical robots could outperform humans. Are we able to cope with the potential of innovations? Can we accelerate? And will AI be able to also make consciousness robots? Or is that never possible? And how does the future of universities look like?
Maarten Steinbuch is a high-tech systems scientist, entrepreneur and communicator. He holds the chair of Systems & Control at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), where he is Distinguished University Professor. He is also Scientific Director of Eindhoven Engine. The research of his group spans from automotive engineering to mechatronics, motion control, and fusion plasma control. He is most known for his work in the field of advanced motion control and mechatronics, as well as in surgical robotics. Steinbuch is a prolific blogger and a key opinion leader on the influence of new technologies on society. He is (co)-founder of 8 start-ups, of which three on surgical robotics.
